Key differences between CAT, MAT, XAT, and SNAP Exams

When it comes to pursuing a postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM), one can take several entrance exams to get admission into top business schools across India. The most popular ones include CAT, MAT, XAT, and SNAP. Each of these exams has distinguishing characteristics that set it distinct from the others.

CAT Exam

CAT or Common Admission Test is a national-level management entrance exam that is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) every year. It is one of the most popular tests among MBA candidates and is accepted by over 1000 B-Schools across the country, including GIBS Business School, the top PGDM college in Bangalore.

The CAT is a computer-based exam with three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). Each session lasts 60 minutes, and the exam lasts 180 minutes.

The CAT exam is notorious for its difficulty, and it assesses a candidate’s aptitude, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. It is also well-known for its unpredictability, as the difficulty level and types of questions fluctuate year after year.

MAT Exam

The All-India Management Association (AIMA) administers the MAT, or Management Aptitude Test, at the national level. It takes place four times a year in February, May, September, and December. Over 600 B-Schools in India recognize the MAT, including GIBS Business School, one of the leading business schools in Bangalore.

The MAT exam is conducted in both online and offline modes, and it consists of five sections – Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence, and Critical Reasoning, and Indian and Global Environment. Each section lasts 40 minutes, and the exam lasts 150 minutes.

Unlike the CAT, the difficulty level of MAT is moderate, and the exam is designed to assess the candidate’s general aptitude and problem-solving ability.

XAT Exam

XAT or Xavier Aptitude Test is conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur, on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). It is a national-level exam that is accepted by over 150 B-Schools across India, including GIBS Business School, which offers a rigorous PGDM program.

The XAT exam consists of four sections – Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge. The exam duration is 210 minutes, and there is an additional essay writing section of 30 minutes.

The XAT exam is well-known for emphasizing decision-making abilities and measuring candidates’ ability to analyze and solve difficult situations. The XAT is also demanding, and the exam is designed to assess the candidate’s aptitude, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

SNAP Exam

SNAP or Symbiosis National Aptitude Test is conducted by Symbiosis International University (SIU) for admission into its affiliated institutes, including Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), considered one of India’s top business schools.

The SNAP exam consists of four sections – General English, Analytical and Logical Reasoning, Quantitative, Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency, and Current Affairs. The exam duration is 120 minutes, and there is no negative marking.

The SNAP exam is noted for its emphasis on general knowledge and current events, and it assesses the candidate’s ability to think critically, analyze facts, and solve complicated issues. The SNAP exam has a moderate difficulty level and is aimed to assess the candidate’s general aptitude and problem-solving skills.

One of the SNAP exam’s distinguishing qualities is that it allows applicants to apply to numerous SIU-affiliated institutes utilizing a single application form. This feature is very useful for candidates who want to increase their chances of admission to a top business school.

Finally, each of these exams – CAT, MAT, XAT, and SNAP – has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. While CAT is known for its high level of difficulty, MAT and SNAP are relatively easier, and XAT focuses on decision-making skills. Candidates should choose the exam that aligns with their strengths and preferences and prepare accordingly to crack the exam.
